Rewires
House Rewire Electrician in Newton Aycliffe
Old rubber or early PVC wiring, not enough sockets, or a renovation that’s the perfect time to start again? We rewire homes across Newton Aycliffe.
A rewire replaces the cables, accessories and usually the consumer unit, bringing the whole installation up to the current wiring regulations. It sounds daunting, but planned properly it is straightforward, and it’s the one job that makes everything else in the house easier.
Most full rewires take place in two stages. First fix runs the new cables while floors are up and walls are open. Second fix, after plastering, fits the sockets, switches and lights. Partial rewires, for an extension, loft conversion or a single floor, follow the same steps on a smaller scale.
Signs a rewire is due
- Black rubber, fabric-covered or lead-sheathed cables anywhere in the house
- Round-pin sockets, brown or cracked accessories, or light switches on skirting boards
- An EICR has come back unsatisfactory with several C2 observations
- Too few sockets, with extension leads in most rooms
- A major renovation where floors and plaster are coming up anyway
- Frequent trips, warm accessories or lights that dim
How we plan a rewire
- Walk round and agree a layout
Socket positions, lighting, data points and any extras like outdoor power or EV readiness are agreed before a price is set.
- First fix
New cables are run with floors lifted and walls chased, room by room so you can keep living in parts of the house.
- Second fix, test and certify
Accessories and fittings go on after plastering. Everything is tested and you receive an Electrical Installation Certificate.
Rewiring Newton Aycliffe’s post-war homes
Many of Newton Aycliffe’s earliest houses are now well over half a century old. Some have been rewired once already, and some have original circuits that were extended rather than replaced. If you’ve bought one of these homes, an EICR before you redecorate tells you whether a rewire is needed, and a rewire before plastering saves a lot of mess later.
Rewire questions
How long does a full rewire take?
A typical three-bedroom house takes around five to seven working days for first and second fix, plus time for plastering in between. We’ll give you a timetable before we start.
Can I stay in the house during a rewire?
Usually yes. We work room by room and restore power at the end of each day wherever possible, though it is dusty and disruptive while floors are up.
How do I know if my house needs rewiring?
An Electrical Installation Condition Report is the clearest way to find out. It tests the existing wiring and tells you what condition it’s in.
